Scholars of all disciplines usually need opportunities to share their thoughts and to collect feed-back on their work. We hereby invite scholars of moral philosophy as well as of normative political theory who are keen to engage in a discussion with their peers to join in regular meetings at which they can present papers or chapters they are writing, or topics they are working on. The invitation is open both to graduate and PhD students and to senior scholars. The initiative aims to increase the reciprocal knowledge of our fellow researchers within the Portuguese scientific community. However, meetings and participation are open to all interested scholars, both from Portugal and from abroad.

The second meeting on ethics and political philosophy will take place at the University of Minho, Braga, on May 20, 2011 . During this meeting, Professor Paula Casal (Reading and Pompeu Fabra) will give two talks, the first one during the ethics workshop, about the origins of morality, and the second one, during the political philosophy workshop, on egalitarian principles. The Origins of Morality
.
Abstract: Recent developments in primatology have shed light on the possible origins of empathy, altruism, reciprocity, cooperation, food sharing, and other forms of behaviour observable in various primates, which may be described as “protomoral”. This scientific data is relevant to various discussions on ethics, which range from the role of emotions to the fear that evolution provides a metaethical debunking explanation of morality.

Why Sufficiency Is Not Enough
.
Abstract: We now have a sophisticated understanding of the principles of equality and priority, but neither our collective understanding of the principle of sufficiency nor its advocate’s statements are very clear. I try to redress this imbalance, offering a systematic clarification of sufficiency principles’ possible contents and an assessment of the role such principles could play within distributive ethics in supplementing rather than replacing principles of equality and priority.

Talks can be given either in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish.
